Owning a Costa Blanca property owner makes it easy to travel to other parts of this wonderful, large country where there are so many interesting places to explore. Include on your holiday list a visit to the towns of Jerez and Cadiz for a week or two. It’s quite a long drive so you may want to break your journey up and combine some other visits en-route. You could visit other places en-route including Cordoba, Granada and Seville, it’s worth enquiring about inclusive coach tours with local travel agents so that you can sit back and enjoy the journey.
This city has been given the title of the oldest one in Western Europe and dates to 1100 BC, its position on the Atlantic Ocean made it popular with explorers and a haven for seafarers. The Old town is filled with quaint houses and historic churches as well as stunning viewpoints. The Cathedral blends Gothic and Baroque architecture and the tower provide a great vantage point to look over the city, surroundings and the ocean.
The beaches in this area can offer a welcome break from sightseeing and the breaks and waves of the Atlantic Ocean offer great surfing to those who are perhaps looking for a more challenging experience than can be found in the Mediterranean shores of the Costa Blanca.
The Ocean also provides Cadiz with a bountiful supply of fish and seafood, one of the most popular local dishes are pescaito frito, little fired fish that have been freshly caught and may include sardines, mackeral dog fish, cuttlefish, whitebait and fish roe, often served in paper as a takeaway snack. In cooler winter months can be warmed up with a fish or shellfish stew. Cazón de Adobo is a marinaded, battered and fried dog fish, it usually has a hint of cumin and is served with a spash of salt and vinegar. Tortillitas de Camarones are lightly battered deep fried whole shrimps, a snack of these dunked in some Mayonnaise are great for lunch or choose them as a starter. In Cadiz no fish or seafood lover will be left hungry!!! The differences in cuisine from that we are used to at home in the Costa Blanca might be subtle but, you will love experiencing those small tweaks as well as tasting new recipes.
Living in the Costa Blanca you will often see Jerez on the shelves of supermarkets close to the ports and wine and that is because this is the old British favourite Sherry. This fortified wine became a popular aperitif in the UK, and it might bring back memories of childhood Christmases when, you were allowed a small sip of Sherry or Port as a treat. Jerez is where this wine has been made since the Christians reclaimed the land from the Moors. They started to export this tasty drink to the UK, and many of the popular brands that we grew up with like Harvey’s and Crofts are rarely seen in Spain. There are, however, plenty of bodegas to see where you can learn how the sherry is made and indulge in tasting the different varieties produced.
The horses of Andalusian are famous for there incredible grace and skill and Jerez is the home of some of the best stables. Try to visit at a time when you can see one of their incredible shows and perhaps combine it with a visit to one of the Flamenco bars to become lost in the rhythm of the guitars, drums and passionate dances. Jerez hosts a Flamenco Festival at the end of February into March every year that might be a great reason to visit at this time of year.
Some dishes unique to Jerez are well worth tasting, you might be able to impress your friends with some exciting new dishes when you return home to the Costa Blanca. Berza Jerezana are Kidneys in Sherry, Chicharrones are pork crackling snacks and there are many more.
We are used to the heat of the Costa Blanca but, Cadiz and Jerez are at the southern tip of the Spanish peninsula and so are likely to become too hot to visit in the summer months. Winter can bring cooler weather in from the Atlantic so try to plan your journey in the Spring or Autumn. It will also be easier to find a good choice of accommodation at this less busy time of year.
There is so much more we could tell you about this area but, why not take the trip from the Costa Blanca and enjoy exploring and discovering the wonderful towns of Cadiz and Jerez for yourself?
