The evolution and importance of International Women’s Day begun early on in the 20th century with women in Russion making the date of 8th March significant in 1917 when they protested for “Bread and Peace”. It has become a worldwide focal point for women’s rights since and celebrates their accomplishments in numerous ways around the world. Events throughout the Costa Blanca begin in February and carry on through to the middle of March.
If you live in Teulada or Moraira you will be able to join in with a number of events celebrating women’s achievements during the time around 8th March. Teulada-Moraira town council have issued a comprehensive program which includes workshops and talks about various topics including well-being and nutrition, exhibitions, activities and concerts as well as sporting events including a ladies paddle tennis tournamount.
In Javea the event will be marked with a 5km charity race, artistic and musical session will include student participation to create and record two video clips, an illustration workshop will take place highlighting female stereotypes and there will be a vartiety of theatrical perfromances as well as a children’s puppet show
Other towns will also create a program of events throughout the region which will include local gatherings and activities created to offer women in the area opportunities to get together. The area generally commist throughout the year to ensure gender equality but, Internation Women’s Day is a time when both men and women are encouraged to celebrate together the achievements of local female entrpreuneurs who have become successful in busniness in the Costa Blanca and throughout Spain.
Although the events surrounding International Women’s day in the Costa Blanca celebrate female achievements they are inclusive and everyone of all age groups will be able to join in with many of the celebrations and events. Some will be fund raisers to support local charities and for anyone who has recently moved to the Costa Blanca, it is an excellent way to show your support for and become part of the local community. This year many of the charity events being held will be raising money for those who were badly effected by the flooding in Valencia late in October 2024.
