The history of Extramadura, like many parts of Spain, is rich in history from Roman and Medieval times, and much of this is well preserved here with ancient ruins, castles, and historic cities including Cáceres and Mérida. Local tradition and culture are important here and are reflected in local cuisine and the friendliness of the locals. When you live Costa Blanca life, you will feel like you have time-travelled when you take a break in Extremadura. Here you can explore its narrow streets, medieval architecture, Gothic Cathedral, a museum which celebrates the history of the area with an impressive collection of antiquities, and Arab Castle of Cáceres. The city of Mérida originated in Roman times and has some well-preserved and interesting sites to explore which include an Amphitheatre and a Temple dedicated to the Goddess Diana.

Badajoz offers the contrast of both ancient monuments standing next to modern architecture with a historic centre lined with imposing palaces, fortified houses, and ancient churches. The most iconic landmark in the city is the Moorish fortress of Alcazaba which offers panoramic views of the city and Guadiana River.

Dishes which are local to the region of Extremadura differ from Spanish dishes which might be more familiar to us living Costa Blanca life and are well worth trying. Migas is a dish made from breadcrumbs with chorizo and garlic. The area also has, in common with neighbouring communities in Spain, an abundance of festivals throughout the year which include traditional music, dancing, and delicious food.

Living Costa Blanca life means that we are perfectly located to travel across Spain or to the north or south and visit a number of destinations. When visiting Extremadura, it is perhaps a good idea to also take your passport with you so that you can cross the border to see a little of Portugal while you’re there. Just a short drive from Badajoz you reach the fortified Portuguese city of Elvas, the well-preserved fortifications were built to protect the town from invasion and are very impressive with imposing walls, bastions, and ramparts. From the fortress, country views can be enjoyed; there is also an impressive 16th century aqueduct that used to supply the city with water and offers visitors a scenic walk. The historic centre of Elvas has narrow streets, charming squares, and historic buildings to explore, and the beautiful fountain in the central square is a popular meeting place for both locals and tourists. The Cathedral is impressive with an ornate interior and a valuable collection of religious art. While here try the local Alentejo pork and cheese pastries.
