Whilst many of us are still working after we move; the Costa Blanca is also somewhere we will eventually retire, and many choose to retire to Spain and buy Javea villa sales. Whether you are already here or move here we have worked hard for the day when we no longer need to set our alarm clock. We have looked forward to having nothing to do unless we want to do it and having no fixed timetable. However, after years of work this can come as a bit of a shock and once the honeymoon period is over, we may no longer want to be on a permanent holiday. Boredom can set in, and this is not good for mental health. The answer might be to do some volunteer work at times and places that suit you, so put down that novel and pick up the local paper to see who might need your help.
The Costa Blanca is an area of animal lovers and many of us have already supported charity functions in aid of local shelters and rescue centres and have very possibly adopted at least one feline or canine friend. You still feel a little bit at a loss and would like to fill in a few more hours and perhaps make some new friends too. The animal shelters are always looking for people to help with the upkeep of the premises, cleaning and maintenance assistance is always welcome but, so too is an hour of your time to walk a dog, brush a donkey or stroke some cats. Most of the animal centres are always grateful for any old bedding or unused furniture that can either be used to keep the residents comfortable or sold on to raise funds. They may even have a shop to sell donated items if you can find a few hours a week to work there. So, if you have made your home in Javea and can’t resist those pleading eyes, help at the animal charities and you will make some great new friends, some with fur and some human but who share the same passion.
There are some wonderful organisations in the Costa Blanca for those in need so if you have a villa in Javea, have recently retired and speak Spanish your services could be invaluable, many other retirees will be grateful for your help with translating their needs at medical appointments. Alternatively, there are charity shops where people can hire medical equipment after operations when they only need them from a limited time or until they can purchase their own. Help of Denia is well known in the area and has shops in Javea, Jesus Pobre, La Xara and Teulada, they not only organise equipment rental but, raise money for by selling a variety of household items and clothing. They also have a desk at Denia hospital to help with interpreting and information. Support for the lonely, infirm, elderly and in need of care available as well as food donations for those in poverty from their group of remarkable volunteers so do contact them if you would like to “Help”!!!.
There are very few people who have not had their lives affected by someone they love experiencing a cancer diagnosis. Whatever the prognosis this is a time when both the patient and their loved ones need support and MABS provides this in the Costa Blanca. They provide support to all nationalities of people in the area who have been affected by cancer and aim to provide care, comfort and counsel. Their services are available to anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer, has a partner who has cancer, respite and bereavement requirements. They are always grateful for donations which can be made via their website and for volunteers who can spare some time to drive patients to appointments, help with fund raising and to work in their shops or support centres. They have a shop and a support centre in Javea and in other locations in the northern Costa Blanca.
Living in Javea might leave us shielded from some of life’s harsher realities but, even in this Costa Blanca paradise there are some who are less fortunate through no fault of their own. With the cost of living rising and limited, low paying employment there are homeless and poverty-stricken people living here too. Project4all is a charity who aim to provide a daily hot meal for every homeless person they find as well as providing them with warm practical clothing, sleeping bags and tents that they need particularly during the winter. They are always grateful any donations and fund raising but, also welcome volunteers in both Moraira and Javea to help their cause. They help with laundry, helping them with a shower, a meal, medical assistance, they deliver food and other necessities four days a week from Javea to Albir and Benidorm and bring the needy human contact, love and provide wherever possible the tools to help them rebuild their lives. They have volunteer chefs and support workers who donate their time and experience.
Helping others in your community will also give you a sense of worth and help you to make new friends, retiring at your house in Javea is just the beginning of an exciting new chapter in your life.
