Wine Tasting And Living In The Costa Blanca

Wine Tasting

If you enjoy a nice glass of wine moving to the Costa Blanca could be the best decision you’ve ever made, backed by rolling hills where vineyards flourish and there are numerous wineries to explore!!! Wherever you choose to buy a property in the Costa Blanca you will never be far from a vineyard, winery and a local bodega where you can sip a crisp local wine in the sun. If you choose to take a tour, of which there are plenty, a knowledgeable guide will explain the whole winemaking process to you while you taste their wine varieties in all their glorious colours as you take in the wonderful views of the countryside and vineyards around you.

Costa Blanca Winemaking History

People on the Costa Blanca have been making wine since Phoenician and Roman times and have developed the region’s own unique grape varieties and winemaking techniques. Nowadays there are several DOs (Denominaciones de Origen) which are prestigious classifications in Spain guaranteeing the quality and origin of the wines they produce. DO Valencia offers a variety of wines from refreshing whites to robust reds, while DO Alicante is known for its full-bodied reds made from the Monastrell grape and also produces some interesting rosé wines. To the south of Alicante is the DO Jumilla region which has its own grape varieties that make dark, powerful red wines.

Wine Tasting

Most wine producers on the Costa Blanca offer guided tours and give informative talks about the winemaking process together with a tasting session to sample their finest produce. You will, of course, be given the opportunity to then purchase your favourite bottles to take home and could perhaps have another tasting session by your own pool with friends and family. For a more personal experience you may also be able to organise private tours which will allow you to have the itinerary tailored to your requirements whether that is so that you can focus on your preferred variety of grape, colour of wine or wish to try those wines which are not so well known. When you live on the Costa Blanca you will soon become a bit of a wine expert!

Local Excursions

There are some companies as well as groups on the Costa Blanca who will organise a coach trip to take you to the vineyards and follow this with a wine tasting tour, they will often have local pick-up points too. This is a great way to learn about local wines and leave your car behind so that you can fully appreciate the experience, it is also a fantastic way to meet new, like-minded people who have bought villas on the Costa Blanca. On these tours you may be raising a glass or two to new friendships!!!

Volunteering

If your love of wine and its production has not yet been satisfied you may find that many wineries organise events during the year. If you live in a wine-making area like the Jalon Valley or Teulada you will find that celebrations during the harvest season welcome additional grape stomping volunteers to join in and enjoy a starry evening with live music and a brilliant atmosphere. Most wineries generally welcome help during the busy harvesting period and, in this way, you can learn more and become truly a part of the local winemaking community.

Teulada Wineries

When you buy a villa in the Moraira area you will be very close to some excellent wineries. The governing town of Teulada has several and is extremely proud of the local dessert wine Moscatel made from the Muscat grape. Montesanco Teulada offers tours and tastings at their traditional farm Abiar Alta which was originally an old raisin dryer. The name is Arabic and refers to the numerous wells that were once found on the farm. The complex includes the old buildings where the grapes would once have been dried and these have been carefully restored. In the past, the production of raisins was the main industry in the Marina Alta but problems with this type of grape crop arose and the grapes were gradually replaced by winemaking varieties. This new project has breathed life back into an old farm and brought the past into the present. The winery also holds events during the year and has its own shop both on-site and online.

Jalon Wineries

Bodegas Xaló offers a great selection of wines. Their Mistela wines include the region’s Moscatel dessert wine as well as a liqueur wine made from the Giró grape variety, which is a gorgeous Bordeaux red colour. They also have a great choice of white, red, rosé and sparkling wines, as well as producing their own red vermouths. When you move to the Jalon Valley you will be living in the very heart of the Costa Blanca’s winemaking region.

Conclusion

There are numerous other wineries on the Costa Blanca from Valencia to Murcia and beyond. If you are a wine lover with a dream of moving to Spain then don’t waste any more time! Contact Hamiltons Real Estate and we will help you find your wonderful new home in Spain where you can while away the evenings enjoying local food and wine on your own terrace under the stars.
