Spain starts to come to life in June with the approach of summer, and on the Costa Blanca, there is always something to celebrate!!! Apart from being a beautiful time of year to enjoy outdoor activities and get back in the pool and sea for a refreshing swim, the days are longer, and going out to enjoy the evening air is something everyone starts to do, even if it is just for a pre-dinner stroll taking in the wonderful scenery.
June is a time for Fiestas on the Costa Blanca, and these can be great fun for everyone. In Moraira, the historical Moors and Christians festival usually starts with a music festival with live local bands performing on a stage by the castle, and the week is followed with re-enactments of the battles between the invading Moors and the Christians re-taking the beach and the castle. There are spectacular costumes, parades with local marching bands, concerts on the castle stage, and fireworks. The beach battles include cleverly choreographed fights with boats coming in from the sea, fisticuffs on the sand, and impressive horseback and camel riding. Additionally, stalls will often be set up to sell souvenirs, local oils, nuts, spices, and other items related to this time in Spain’s history that are still relevant today.
The whole Costa Blanca region will celebrate the Hogueras de San Juan (St. John’s bonfires) on the night of June 23rd, midsummer’s Eve. All towns will set up huge bonfires, and in coastal towns, people will build these on the beaches and gather around them with family and friends to enjoy picnics and drinks together. As it gets dark, the bonfires are lit up, and in some cases, papier-mâché figures are also set alight. The fires symbolize the burning away of bad luck and welcome in the summer solstice. Plenty of local traditions accompany this, and in Moraira, girls write their wishes on pieces of paper to burn in the fires, which are said to ensure the dreams will come true. Boys and men show off by jumping the flames, and at midnight, everybody rushes into the sea again to wash away the winter and welcome the summer. This is followed by a fireworks display, and many will choose to camp overnight on the beach, where there will usually be a disco set up for music and dancing in the early morning hours.
As well as celebrating St John with the rest of the area, Javea also hosts the Montgorock Festival in June, a full weekend of great live rock music from some of the best national groups and artists. La Fontaneral, near the beach. At the month's end, the popular three-day Javea International festival takes place, showing the flavors and traditions of both local and ex-pat communities. In addition to plenty of food and drink for everyone to enjoy, there is usually music and displays from each of the countries represented.
Many towns and villages in the Costa Blanca will have small informal festivals with stalls, music, and fireworks during June, and these can be very enjoyable.
During the day, more and more possibilities become available during the month of June, and you may want to enjoy a relaxing boat trip or mini cruise from Mundo Marino in Altea or spend some time enjoying the local markets and rastros. As the day grows longer and warmer, there is so much to do before the Costa Blanca becomes hotter and more crowded during the peak of the summer season. The art society of the Marina Alta provides presentations about heritage and culture at the Parador Hotel in Javea and at the Salones Canor in Teulada. These give those who are interested some fascinating insights.
Water sports become more readily available in all the coastal towns of the Costa Blanca and coastal and mountain walks can be enjoyed, some guided walking excursions can enhance your experience and help you to get to know the area better. June is also a great time of year to just relax outside and enjoy a good book on your terrace or people watching at your favourite local bar, of which towns on the Costa Blanca have plenty to choose from!
