When you live in the Costa Blanca, a holiday to the Balearic Islands is such an easy trip to make, and, for those who own a home in Denia, it is just a ferry ride away. It isn’t important that you already live in this beautiful part of Spain; you will still want to have new adventures, and the beauty of living in the Costa Blanca is its position within the Iberian Peninsula, which makes other regions accessible.
Located between Spain and Italy in the turquoise Mediterranean Sea, we find the Balearic Islands. Each island has its own unique style. Ibiza is famous for its party atmosphere, the coves of Menorca are wonderfully peaceful, and Mallorca’s capital city, Palma, is very impressive.
If you own a house in Denia or another northern Costa Blanca town, there is no need to even get on a plane, although there are reasonably priced direct flights from either Alicante or Valencia to Mallorca, the largest of the Islands. The pleasant and relaxing option of taking the ferry from Denia is extremely popular, and it means that you can travel with your car and take your dog with you on your holiday too. There are several crossings each day, the shortest one takes just two hours and lands in San Antonio Ibiza, while the longest crossing to Palma de Mallorca takes almost 8 hours. You can easily find out more about the prices, timings and routes on the website of Baleária.
There are numerous resorts to choose from and accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. You may need to plan between your bookings and the ferry timetable if you intend to do some island hopping while visiting the Balearics from Denia. This is easy to do either online or by visiting a local travel agent in the Costa Blanca.
Food
Despite being so close to where we live in the Costa Blanca, the Islands do have some recipes that are unique to the Balearic cuisine. Here are some suggestions for things you should try when visiting from Denia.
Sobrassada is a spreadable sausage made from cured pork. Caldereta de Langosta is a luxurious and tasty lobster stew which is particularly favoured in Menorca. Arroz a Banda: this rice dish is made with fish broth and served with a spicy sauce. Rabbit with onion: a classic, simple and delicious Mallorcan dish. Duck with olives: Another traditional dish from Mallorca that perfectly combines the rich flavours of the ingredients. Trempo is a fresh, seasonal salad, and Empanada de Cordero is a savoury lamb-filled pastry. Tombet is a vegetarian dish made with potatoes, peppers, onions and aubergines and is great to eat with the local and versatile flatbread Cocas. If you like to finish your meal with a cheese platter, then don’t forget to try Maó cheese from Menorca, which is known for its distinctive flavour.
For homeowners in Denia and others who live in the Costa Blanca, a holiday or even a short weekend break to the Balearics will provide a change of scenery and pace and increase your knowledge and love of our adopted home in Spain.
