If you want an introduction to Jalón, Saturday morning is a good place to start.
The rastro is in full swing, people are browsing antiques and second-hand finds, the cafés are busy and there is that familiar mixture of Spanish and international voices you hear throughout this part of the Costa Blanca.
Jalón — Xaló in Valencian — is also known for its wine, and the bodegas and surrounding vineyards are part of the identity of the valley rather than simply something put on for visitors.
Come back during the week and you see another side of the town.
People are shopping, stopping for coffee, going about their day and using the local businesses and services. Jalón is a place people actually live in throughout the year.
That combination is a big part of its appeal.
The mountains are difficult to ignore in the Jalón Valley.
They frame the villages, appear at the end of streets and form the backdrop to villas, fincas and terraces throughout the area.
Then there are the vineyards.
Drive between Jalón and Llíber and you see them stretching across the valley floor, changing with the seasons and giving this part of the Costa Blanca a character all of its own.
People often begin a Costa Blanca property search thinking they need a sea view.
Then they stand on a terrace overlooking the Jalón Valley.
Sometimes the wish list changes.
One of the things we enjoy about working from our Jalón office is the variety of homes we see.
There are traditional village houses tucked into old streets, sometimes hiding wonderful courtyards and terraces behind fairly modest façades.
There are detached villas overlooking the valley.
And then there are the fincas.
For many buyers, a finca is the property they had somewhere in the back of their mind when they first started dreaming about Spain: land around the house, Mediterranean planting, mountains in the distance and enough outside space to make the most of the climate.
These aren't interchangeable versions of the same lifestyle.
Living in a townhouse in the centre of Jalón feels very different from waking up in a country property surrounded by land.

We call it the Jalón Valley, but one of the pleasures of getting to know the area is discovering the smaller villages around it.
Llíber is just along the valley and has its own character. Smaller and quieter than Jalón, it sits among some particularly attractive countryside and vineyards.
Continue exploring and you reach Alcalalí, another traditional village surrounded by mountain scenery.
These places are close together, but they don't feel identical.
That is something a portal search doesn't show particularly well.
A buyer might arrive asking exclusively for property for sale in Jalón and end up falling for a home near Llíber or Alcalalí simply because they hadn't realised how close everything was.
It happens.
Life in the valley isn't about having a long list of attractions to visit.
That isn't really the point.
It is stopping for coffee in the village. Going to the market. Walking through countryside that starts almost at the end of the street. Meeting people you recognise. Having lunch somewhere local and realising you've been sitting there much longer than planned.
And, of course, the coast is still there when you want it.
Living in the Jalón Valley doesn't mean choosing between inland Spain and the Mediterranean. People living here regularly head towards Benissa, Moraira, Calpe, Jávea and the surrounding coastline.
You simply get to come home to the mountains afterwards.
Every season gives the valley a different appearance, but there is a period when the countryside becomes particularly memorable.
The almond blossom arrives and suddenly parts of the landscape are covered in soft white and pink.
It doesn't last forever, which is probably part of what makes it so special.
For people who live here, these seasonal changes become familiar markers in the year — blossom, vines, harvests and the changing colours of the countryside.
It is a very different relationship with the landscape from living directly on the coast.
The Jalón Valley has attracted international residents for many years, but it has retained its Spanish identity.
That balance works well.
You can settle into life here without feeling isolated, while still living somewhere that has its own traditions, local businesses and established community.
For buyers moving permanently to Spain, rather than simply buying a holiday property, that can become one of the things they appreciate most.
It feels lived in.
Ask ten homeowners and you will probably get ten slightly different answers.
Some came for the countryside.
Some wanted more space.
Some fell in love with a finca.
Others wanted village life rather than resort life.
And some simply drove inland one day, saw the valley and realised they preferred it to the place they had originally intended to buy.
