A favourite walk is from the beach of Las Rotas in Dénia across the Montgó to Jávea Port. The walk is of medium difficulty, is about 8.8 km one way, and takes approximately three hours. There is a bus to take you back, or, as an alternative, a boat can give you a relaxing and enjoyable return journey along the coast.
Jávea has many other walks to offer, thanks to the richness of the ecology in the area. A fairly long trail passes through the undulating hills south of the town in the Parque Forestal de Granadella area. Alternatively, you may enjoy the coastal scenery of Cala Barraca. This rocky cove is situated in the small bay of Portitxol, guarded by Cap Prim and Cap Negre, as well as the island of Portitxol. The cove takes its name from the small fishing huts ("barracas") that were built here many years ago, some of which still remain.
The bay of Portitxol ("small port") has been used as an anchorage and landing point for more than two thousand years, and archaeological discoveries suggest habitation stretching back to the 7th century BC. This short route starts at the Tosca stone cross of Portitxol and passes through trees and along a dusty plateau before dropping steeply into the cove and the delightful beach of Cala Barraca. There is also an alternative that provides a great close-up view of the little island of Portitxol.
