If you fancy a quick and easy trip from your living in the Costa Blanca to the south of Spain, then the Costa Del Sol along the Andalusian coast will provide you with the perfect getaway. The “Coast of the Sun” stretches from the Malaga province towards Cadiz and offers interesting and vibrant cities, pretty villages and lovely beaches. The journey will take you about 5.5 to 6 hours by car, so it isn’t too far either, and the drive along the coast is beautifully scenic.
The city of Malaga is a great place to start your trip from the Costa Blanca. You can explore the historic fortress, Alcazaba, which will immerse you in the history of Spain, enjoy the artwork of Picasso or simply take time out to relax on the beach.
Marbella provides a complete change of atmosphere from our home in the Costa Blanca. This glamorous town offers luxury to those who can afford the lifestyle, but it is nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Sierra Blanca mountains, which also offer natural beauty, together with a mix of historical charm and modern amenities. Puerto Banus is Marbella’s iconic marina where luxury yachts, designer boutiques and a vibrant nightlife await visitors.
Nerja is a beautiful, whitewashed town with caves to explore, and it is really a picturesque treasure of this part of Spain. Ronda is another must-see town along the Andalusian coast and is nothing like anything we have at home in the Costa Blanca. The town is perched dramatically on top of a cliff overlooking a deep gorge. The incredible bridge across the gorge has breathtaking views of the country surrounding this beautiful area, and the Arabic baths are an amazingly well-preserved historical site to visit.
The town of Fuengirola is lively and popular with both national and international tourists, with beaches, nightlife and family-friendly attractions, it has a great holiday atmosphere.
We are used to beautiful beaches at home in the Costa Blanca, but during a visit to the Costa del Sol, you will also be able to enjoy some more of the best beaches in Spain. The bountiful Mediterranean Sea provides delicious seafood and fish to the beachside restaurants.
There are lovely towns and villages to visit throughout the Costa del Sol, as well as art galleries and museums to visit and plenty of water sports available. The Andalusian countryside, beautifully scenic and a day away from the beach, makes a nice change. Golfers can play a round or two at one of the world-class courses in the area, which makes the Costa del Sol a popular destination for enthusiasts.
Flamenco comes from Andalucia, and an evening at a traditional show is definitely something to look forward to. These shows will allow you to immerse yourself in the rhythm of the castanets, guitars and drums and be dazzled by this passionate dance form.
If you take your passport with you on your trip from your home in the Costa Blanca you might wish to make the short trip across to Gibraltar, there are buses available from many towns in the area so you don’t need to worry about driving and parking or you might wish to book an organised excursion from a local travel agent to enjoy a guided tour and lunch. The most iconic feature is the limestone rock itself, which can be reached by cable car or bus and has views across to Africa as well as Spain. The rock is home to the famous Barbary apes, the only wild apes to be found in Europe. Here, on the upper part of the Gibraltar rock, they roam freely in the nature reserve. The town is worth exploring with familiar British stores, of course, Gibraltar is famous for tax-free shopping.
Although we are lucky to have a home in the Costa Blanca, it is also nice to explore other parts of the wonderful Mediterranean, and the Costa del Sol is a truly fascinating area to visit. Enjoy your travels!!!
