This beautiful town in the community of Valencia is a wonderful place to buy a home in the Costa Blanca. Orba’s historic centre is full of traditional architecture and interesting little streets with pretty houses and ancient churches. Orba is located a short distance inland from the coast but, in the heart of lovely countryside. The location of this village means that there is always somewhere interesting to go or things to do at the weekend.
Orba has a history of ceramic making, one of the few places in the Costa Blanca to create pieces of pottery and continue the legacy with a Museum, Museo del Fang, well worth visiting to see the collection of pieces which show the history of the profession which flourished during the 17th century. Here you can enjoy a guided tour of the workshop and see how the pieces are crafted. In the town you may wish to find a local pottery item or two for your home in Orba. Each year in October there is a market celebrating this craft and selling items. Why not indulge in a visit to the museum and some shopping during the weekend, they often have events with free or reasonably priced activities for adults and children. The museum is open at the weekend in the mornings between 10:00 and 13:30 and on Saturday afternoons from 17:00-20:00 and there are also workshops throughout the town.
Orba is also home to artisans who make leather goods including bags and fashion accessories well worth buying – the town really is heaven for shopaholics and also a great place to find gifts for special occasions.
This craft activity in this little town is just one of the many positive parts about living in Orba, the village is situated just a short drive from the coast but, overlooks wonderful countryside and agricultural land where citrus, almond, carob and olive trees thrive. The areas vineyards also produce tasty local wines so touring these if the mood takes you is a great experience. Taking a walk or a bike ride in this beautiful landscape during the weekend is another bonus for those who choose to buy a home in Orba.
Guarding the valleys surrounding Orba are the ruins of Castillo de Awraba or El Castellet, some of the walls a tower and a cistern are still standing and in relatively good condition. From here you can view the beautiful scenery of the region. The church in the centre of Orba as well as the original washhouse, Font de Baix, should also be visited when you have time.
The local U3A organises a variety of regular activities for those who live in Orba or close by in Pego, Benidoleig or Ondara. If you choose to join the U3A you will find that you can participate in walking groups, trips to other parts of Spain, bridge, dance classes including ballroom and line dancing, quizzes and lots more. The local stables offer riding lessons and hacks for all ages over 10 years old and there are golf courses at La Sella as well. If you love animals and would like to volunteer the local rescue centre APROP in Pego will always be grateful for extra hands to help with both the dogs and the cats at the shelter or with fostering rescue animals.
In addition to the local crafts available to buy in Orba there is always a market somewhere in the area and the cities of Valencia and Alicante are not too far away if you fancy visiting a department store but, just along the road you also have the Ondara La Marina Shopping centre where you can satisfy all your retail therapy needs.
A reason many of us move to Spain is to enjoy a slower pace of life and then forget to do just that so once you are living in Orba remember to take time to enjoy your home simply relaxing by the pool or on your balcony, sit at a local café and enjoy watching people pass by or perhaps visit a Spa for a couple of days of pampering, there are plenty not too far away. Complete the day with an evening enjoying local cuisine and wine in a restaurant with friends.
It is easy when we live somewhere to get stuck in a rut and forget what attracted us to the area in the first place, don’t fall into this trap Orba and the Costa Blanca have so much to enjoy and the weekend is the perfect time to explore.
