Communities in the Costa Blanca really pull together in the lead up to Christmas with fun, festive, charity fund raisers for everyone to enjoy. Along the Coast from Altea to Calpe, Javea, and Denia local charities, businesses, and residents join in to support local causes while spreading holiday spirit. The first weeks of December see markets, concerts, fun runs, festive fairs and carols in church squares all to raise funds or donations for worthy causes within the community. When you
with Hamiltons of London, you can look forward to participating in these joyful and worthwhile events.
HELP of Marina Alta holds their Ultimate Christmas Fair in the Salones Canor in Teulada on the last Sunday of November. This local charity helps community needs with hospital appointments, with translation if required, and transport, as well as providing support, food, and general assistance for vulnerable residents in the northern Costa Blanca. Their fundraiser has craft stalls and a lot of festive fun; the charity depends upon volunteers and donations of items as well as money. They also have outlets supplying assistance aids to local people in need. For anybody who buys a home in the Costa Blanca, joining HELP as a volunteer is not only an excellent way to be of service to the community but also to meet people and make new friends.
The local Motorcycle associations are major fund-raisers in the town of Moraira and, in early December, hold a fun Santa Bike ride, and people are encouraged to donate children’s slippers, pyjamas, and socks, which will be given to the local Make a Smile foundation. Not only is this a great cause, but it is fun to see lots of Santas riding around the town and the surrounding areas of Moraira.
The Lions Club of Teulada-Moraira plays a major role in raising funds to help local organisations, and each year they hold a Carol concert in Moraira church square with a tent providing mulled wine and minced pies, and other goodies, and Father Christmas will pay a visit too! The Club raises funds to support local community needs and welfare.
Javea raised funds for worthy causes in aid of less fortunate residents with an annual solidarity fair (Fifa Solidaria). The main event is in the Port of Javea, but with additional stalls often being set up with a more general Christmas Market and activities in the old town as well. The full schedule is not released too far in advance, so if you buy a home in Javea, keep your eyes open for confirmation of dates each year. However, markets, lights, and activities usually run throughout the festive season from early December into January. There are lots of gift ideas, so it’s a lovely way to do Christmas shopping while helping others. With handcrafted jewellery, ceramics, leather goods, textiles, wood crafts, and natural soaps, as well as treats including honey, jams, chocolates, and artisan bread, there is a lot of choice. There are also workshops to demonstrate who some of the items are made by, and the atmosphere is full of festive cheer with music, storytelling, and children’s activities.
For those who find a home for sale in Calpe, you will also be able to help local charities and find unique Christmas gifts at the Fira de Nadal in the old town, where there will be local crafts, food, entertainment, and stalls set up by charitable associations. The full program of events is not released until late in November each year, so keep your eyes peeled on social media pages. The local Rotary club often raises funds, and the Calpe U3A may put on a Christmas concert.
Denia is the largest town in the northern Costa Blanca and has a full calendar of festive events each year to raise funds for local charities, including their Christmas Market. The Red Cross and Caritas have food collection drives so that no one goes without food during the holidays, and the Charity Christmas Concert supports community initiatives and features local choirs, orchestras, and school groups to sing carols and classic Christmas songs. The Christmas Light Festival in Denia’s marina is also a time for giving, with donation boxes available for children’s gifts and food banks while you enjoy the illumination of the harbour, live entertainment, and festive food.
For those who live in Altea or have a home in Jalon, there will also be local events, Christmas markets, and concerts to enjoy while raising funds for children, the poor in the area, and animal shelters. Up and down the Costa Blanca in the weeks leading up to Christmas, the community unites amidst the lights and decorations, bringing true meaning to the spirit of Christmas.
